Frequently Asked Questions | Portraits
- Portraits, you say? I thought portraits were old and stuffy.
These are not your grandma's portraits. A portrait session with me can be for a family, an engagement, a boudoir shoot, maternity, birth, baby, children, or simply because you want some photos taken to update that 1997 faux finished background shot that's framed on the bookshelf. - What should I expect at a portrait session?
Children: Depending on their age, my bag of puppets, stickers, bubbles and/or jelly bracelets may make an appearance. I am not afraid to be silly with your kids. I will try my darnedest to play it cool with the 9 year old boys. It is best if parents hang back so that I can interact with the kids and they are not confused as to where to direct their attention. Children will do best if they are fed beforehand, and there is no nap interference with shooting.
Family: If there are small children involved in the family shoot, then usually we will work to get the larger group shots taken first and then if time and the kids' energy allows- we will work to get more combinations of groupings or locations.
Maternity: This is such a unique time in the life of a family and I think it's special to get maternity photos done. Comfort is key. It is best to plan maternity photos in the 32-36ish week of pregnancy (if possible, of course). At that stage, you'll for sure look preggo, but still have energy and natural glow.
Birth: Whether it's your first child or last- if you want to have life literally documented, this is for you. Every family and birth plan is different- but I can come at any point in the process, day or night, hospital or home. Contact me for more information.
Newborns: We'll stay close to your home most likely. I'll tour your home or chosen location to scope out the best natural light and we'll keep sweet baby warm and cuddled in soft textured blankets while I take detailed shots of those itty bitty toes and cherub face. I am a mother myself and fully prepared for crying, wailing, spit-up and any other baby surprises your cute child sends my way. No worries.
Boudoir: Artistically, the female body has been an inspiration for sculptors, painters and photographers. If you want a gift for your significant other, or just to showcase your own assets, consider boudoir. I prefer natural light to give a natural, romantic look. Gather your favourite lingerie pieces, shoes, jewelery, white blouse, etc. and we can consult before the session on what will work best. Feel free to email with any specific questions you may have regarding boudoir. - Location? Location.
It depends on you. Maybe it's your own backyard. Maybe it's where you got engaged. Or the nearest beach you love, or while you're spending time making pancakes or golfing or flying kites as a family. We can discuss ahead of time what you want and make a plan beforehand. I also know lots of grass-waving fields, brightly coloured walls, rustic barns, tree-lined vistas, modern architecture or quaint verandas that like to be photographed. - What if it rains?
Yes, rains is a factor here in the Greater Vancouver area. In fact, I even have an umbrella collection in my car trunk just in case! I DO shoot in a light drizzle, so please be prepared accordingly. Overcast skies actually make a giant lighting soft box in the sky and make for more saturated, colourful photos. - How long does the session last?
Approximately 1-2 hours time. (I'm not going to abruptly stop shooting at the stroke of a clock). I want to make sure we have enough variation to give you choice. That being said, I am a mother and know that the attention span of little kids is limited- so the first 30 minutes are integral to children/family sessions. - When should I book my newborn's photography session?
The answer to that is sooner than later. Even if you're in the last trimester of pregnancy, it's not too early to book it in. I'll pencil your due date into the schedule and we'll work within approximately a 2 week window around it. - What is the best age to take newborn photogaphy?
Ideally within the first 2 weeks of the baby being born. Newborns are still sleepy to the world and easier to mould and move around without being too disturbed. - What should we wear?
Whatever makes you happy and comfortable. Colorful and fun is better then prim and proper “Sunday Best.” Think textures, layers, accessories. If you're doing a larger family grouping, it's best to coordinate but not match. Matching = same, same. Coordinating = happy harmony. (Attire for Maternity, Newborn, and Boudoir sessions will have more specific suggestions I'm happy to discuss with you). - Props?
Depending on the type of session, we can use props if you wish. Props can be great when they add to the session without distracting from the subjects. I have an extensive collection of mid century antiques, wooden chairs, antique windows, vintage suitcases, old tea cups, chalkboards and more. This will have to be prearranged ahead of the shoot. Please let me know if you have a specific idea in mind and feel free to bring your own things. For newborn sessions, I have a basket with a selection of different blankets, hats, and toques that are available to use. - What forms of payment do you accept?
Portrait session payment is due on the event/session date. Cash, email money transfer and cheques (please make payable to Stephanie Hall) are accepted at this point in time. - More questions?
